Helene describes herself as creative, logical, and open-minded. She said that ever since childhood, entrepreneurship has always been “pulsing through her veins.” She earned her B.A. in Marketing from George Mason University in Virginia. After she worked at an ESL school in San Francisco, she moved to the mile-high city to attend the University of Denver for an MBA. Her experiences throughout her education have sharpened her skills for the business world and have helped her launch TAOpivot, a company that specializes in helping foreign talent and U.S. employers work together. Through TAOpivot, she wants to give back to her parents, who Helene says have worked hard to be a great influence on her growing up.

In her free time, Helene likes to knit, paint, work out, write stories, medidate, play with her cats, watch Ghost Adventures, and tweet on Twitter. She also plays piano, guitar, and trumpet. Her perfect date involves dinner, coffee, or drinks over conversation, with karaoke as a plus.

Joe Nguyen, 29
Vietnamese-American | Journalist, The Denver Post

As a foodie, Joe describes himself to be eclectic and versatile. He has enjoyed the fame of winning multiple ice cream eating competitions, but he would say his biggest accomplishment has been learning to cook well. He said, “I love to eat and when I learned to make food I enjoyed, it was heaven. I got there by practice, plain and simple.”

Joe’s collegiate experience began at the University of Colorado at Boulder studying computer science. He transferred to the Metropolitan State University of Denver after his freshman year. There, he entered the world of journalism, which he says went against the typical “Asian” expectations of becoming a doctor or engineer. But following his passion has been far more rewarding than going into a field he would not have enjoyed.

Joe is also a homebrewer. In his free time, he brews his own beer. He said, “I created a batch made with Skittles once—it was not good.” His perfect date would just be to engage in a fun conversation with some good food and a couple of drinks.

Qualities that attract him: A sense of humor is a must – laughter keeps the world going ‘round
Dislikes: Negativity – nothing drags him down faster than someone who is down about the world
Favorite food: Chipotle, hands down – specifically a steak fajita burrito. However, when the cold season sets in, a bowl of bun bo hue is amazing.
Can’t live without: Air, food, sock puppets
Words to live by: “Learn to be able to do everything.” Advice his dad gave him growing up and he tries his best to live up to it.

Kat Asuncion, 26
Filipino-American | Analyst, Supply Management and Strategic Planning

Kat describes herself as driven, independent, and impulsive. Working in a male-dominated industry, she considers earning her BSBA from University of Colorado Denver her greatest accomplishment. “This means more to me than merely something that can be put on a resume,” she said. As the first in her immediate family to complete higher education, Kat feels that each generation has worked hard to provide more resources to the next. “Every time I did not want to study, do homework, or go to class, I had an even stronger feeling of responsibility to take full advantage of the opportunities I had,” she said. She strives to emulate the strong, independent, and capable qualities of her grandmother.

Kat admits to being the “biggest dork” as she loves biology and financial accounting text books, watching Xena: Warrior Princess, and Metal Gear video games. She spends her free time with her dog, family, and friends. Her interests: trap shooting, sporting clays, and UFC fighting all make part of her perfect date, which would also include dinner at a steakhouse or sushi restaurant.

Qualities that attract her: Sense of humor, any qualities that she would like to better in herself
Dislikes: Close-mindedness, lacking motivation
Favorite food: Medium-rare steak
Can’t live without: Her family
